For a painted wood sign you’ll need:

  • Wood sign blank or board
  • Sandpaper
  • Base coat paint
  • Stencil vinyl
  • Transfer tape
  • Weeding tool
  • Scraper
  • Acrylic paint for the lettering
  • Stencil brush or foam pouncer
Supplies for laser wood signs

For a laser-engraved wood sign you’ll need:

  • Laser engraver or cutter
  • Wood board or sign blank
  • Masking tape to reduce scorch marks
  • Sandpaper
  • Wood glue for layered cut pieces
  • Clear sealer or finishing oil

Tips by method

The fine hatch lines in the plaid layer need some size. Cut it large, or print the PNG and skip weeding altogether.

Adhesive or heat-transfer vinyl
Cut it large. The fine lines and small pieces are hard to weed at small sizes.
Laser
Engrave it. The details are too fine to cut cleanly.
Sublimation
Print the PNG. No cutting or weeding.
